Crossing to Sweden

  • Helsingor to Helsingborg takes 20 minutes
  • The harbour sits below the castle ramparts
  • Bring identification for the crossing
  • Not part of the guided four site day

Two additions, in opposite directions

Kronborg sits at a junction that most visitors do not notice. From the harbour immediately below the castle a ferry crosses to Sweden in about twenty minutes. From the station a few minutes' walk away, the coast railway runs south towards Copenhagen and passes Humlebaek, where the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art stands on the shore.

That means a castle visit can be extended in two entirely different directions without a long journey in either. One adds a country; the other adds one of the best regarded modern art museums in Europe. Neither is included in the guided day, which returns to Copenhagen directly.

The choice between them is really a choice about what kind of day you want. Sweden is a short, novel crossing with a town to walk around at the far end. Louisiana is a substantial museum visit that deserves several hours in its own right.

Crossing to Helsingborg

The ferry to Helsingborg takes about twenty minutes and runs frequently enough that it functions more like a bus than a scheduled sailing. The terminal is beside the castle, so the walk from Kronborg's gate to the boat is short and flat.

What you get at the other end is a Swedish coastal town with a walkable centre, a terrace of steps up to the ruined tower of Karnan, and a view back across the Sound to the castle you have just left. That reverse view is the single best argument for making the crossing: Kronborg reads very differently from the water.

Bring identification. It is a border crossing between two countries, and while checks are usually light they are not guaranteed to be absent. Allow three hours for a crossing, a walk and a return if you want it to feel unhurried.

Down the coast to Louisiana

Louisiana is at Humlebaek, on the coast line between Helsingor and Copenhagen, and it is within walking distance of the station.[4] That makes it unusually easy to reach as a stop on the way back rather than as a separate expedition.

The museum is built as a series of low pavilions running through a sculpture park to the edge of the shore, and the building is as much the attraction as the collection inside it. Adults pay 145 DKK and students 130 DKK, and under 18s enter free.[4]

Its opening hours are the detail that makes it work as an add-on: it opens late from Tuesday to Friday, closing at 22:00, which is far later than any castle.[4] A visitor who spends the middle of the day at Kronborg can still give Louisiana three or four unhurried hours afterwards.

20 min

Sweden is a twenty minute ferry crossing from the harbour below Kronborg.

Fitting either one around the castle

Kronborg itself deserves two to three hours, and both additions are best treated as the second half of a day rather than as items squeezed into a full one. The practical order is castle first, addition second, because the castle closes earlier than the museum and much earlier than the ferry stops running.

Mondays are the day to avoid for a combined plan. Louisiana closes on Mondays, and outside the summer season so does Kronborg, so a Monday can leave you with a ferry crossing and very little else.[4]

If you are travelling from Copenhagen under your own steam, the geography is on your side: Humlebaek is between Helsingor and the city, so stopping there on the way back costs you no backtracking at all.

What the guided day does and does not cover

The guided day booked from this site visits four sites and returns to Copenhagen. It does not cross to Sweden and it does not stop at Louisiana, and no version of it can be extended to do so, because the minibus runs a fixed route with a fixed return.

That is not a reason to avoid the tour. It is a reason to decide in advance which day you are having. The guided day is the efficient way to see four historic sites without managing three towns of regional rail; an independent day built around Kronborg plus one addition is a slower, narrower plan with more freedom in it.

Travellers who want both usually split them across two days: the guided day for the castles and the cathedral, then a separate trip north for the ferry or the museum. Trying to combine them produces a day that is mostly transport.

If you only have one afternoon, pick one

The temptation with two good additions in opposite directions is to attempt both, and it does not work. Kronborg deserves two to three hours, the ferry round trip with a walk in Helsingborg wants three, and Louisiana properly seen wants three or four. Any plan containing all of them is a plan about transport.

If you have never been to Sweden, take the ferry. The novelty is real, the crossing is short, and the view back at Kronborg from the water is the best perspective on the castle you will get. It is also the cheaper of the two additions and the one that needs the least planning, because the boats run frequently enough that you can simply turn up.

If you care about art or architecture, take Louisiana instead, and give it more time than you think it needs. It is not a museum to look round in an hour, and its late closing from Tuesday to Friday is precisely what makes it work after a castle morning.

The one combination that does fit comfortably is Kronborg in the morning and Louisiana in the afternoon, using the coast line south. That is a full, satisfying day with no backtracking, and it is the itinerary worth building if you only get one shot at this stretch of coast.

A final scheduling note applies to both additions. Whichever you choose, check the return connection before you commit to the outbound one, because the timetable thins out in the evening and the walk back to the station is not a short one in poor weather.

Buying the return leg at the same time as the outbound removes the last piece of friction from an afternoon that otherwise runs itself, and it costs nothing extra to do so.
